When it Comes to Money, Less Isn’t More
By: Judy Widener

Money has a lot of power in our society, but it’s up to us to define the purpose of it. Money is a neutral form of energy that can be used to manipulate, destroy, create, heal, or transform. We choose what we do with our money and how we feel about it.

Whether you have plenty of cash or just barely scrape by every month, your financial situation is a direct result of what you believe about your ability to create it. Most people have a love-hate relationship with money. For example, we love the rush of excitement we feel when we buy new things. It warms our hearts to give money to a charity that does good work in the community. We wish we had more money, but we are emotionally blocked. We often hold onto the belief that we don’t deserve abundance. We might think that rich people are smarter or more clever than us; that they know some secret. Or we might believe that wealthy people are selfish.

Whatever your beliefs about money are, it’s a good bet that most of your beliefs about money are so deep-seated that you aren’t aware of them on a conscious level. They may seem so powerful that you might think that they are set in stone. However, the only rule about money is that no one but you decides how much money is the right amount for you to have.

Here’s a new way of thinking about money: embrace the belief that there is as much “moolah” as there is energy to create value in the world. You can also reject the notions that money is the root of all evil, it will corrupt you, and that it’s always a struggle to make money.

You can create financial abundance as an act of self-love and to help your family and friends. I’ve challenged myself to find 50 different ways to help others prosper this year, and so far I’m up to 18. It’s a lot of fun and it feels so good to know I made someone’s life just a little bit better. We never know how big an impact a seemingly small gift can make in a person’s life. My personal goal is to achieve the level of prosperity that George Bernard Shaw meant when he wrote, “Money is worth nothing to the man who has more than enough.”

People attract prosperity when they are emotionally ready to embrace and enjoy it. So open up your wallet and dump out the negative beliefs about money that limit your prosperity. Think about specific acts of kindness you will create for yourself and others, and use that enthusiasm to focus your energy. Start with something small and simple. You can teach this concept to your kids by helping them buy a “Toys ’R’ Us” toy the next time you go shopping, then going together to donate it to a battered women’s shelter.

Prosperity expert Bob Proctor said, “Money was never intended to make you happy; it was only meant to give you choices.” You can choose to accept the gift of abundance into your life and use it to create a more balanced life for yourself and a better world.
